The Short Stirling, N6086, was commissioned following a generous donation to the RAF by Lady Rachael Markham MacRobert. The story of Lady MacRobert and the circumstances of the donation can be found at the history page.

The Stirling was given the call-sign LS-F (as can be seen on the RHS photograph below), and the 'F for Freddie' designation has ever since been used on the MacRobert's Reply aircraft. As well as the two Stirlings featured on this site, there has since been a Buccaneer and then a Tornado with the same name and MacRobert's emblem).

The N6086 was formally named in October 1941 and was handed over to her pilot, Squadron Leader Peter Boggis (seen here in the light flying suit, with his crew) in a ceremony at RAF Wyton, home of 15 Squadron who were to have both of the MacRobert's Reply Stirlings. On the lower nose was painted the family crest, and below that was painted 'MacRobert's Reply' in white paint. Lady MacRobert sent a special tribute to the aircraft and the men who were to fly and maintain it (read more about the tribute).

N6086 was soon in action with its first operational mission just two days later when it was one of 7 aircraft attacking Nuremberg.
